Gilberto Gil performs 'Andar com fe'
At the 5th birthday party for Creative Commons on Saturday night, the great Gilberto Gil — musician, Brazil's minister of culture and a Creative Commons supporter — performed several acoustic tracks. Here is a 3-minute video of his popular hit "Andar com Fé," captured with my Nokia N95 camera phone.
I'm still hoping others who shot video at the event Saturday will send pointers to the footage.

Russ Solomon on Tower Records' rise & fall
I recently interviewed Russ Solomon, founder of Tower Records, about the music retailing giant's rise and fall. The interview took place as employees were clearing out of the company's headquarters in West Sacramento, Calif.
A couple of surprising comments: "I don't think we're seeing the passing of an era (from physical goods to digital downloads). I don't think the CD is gone."
"The impact of Napster and free downloading was not as severe as one might suspect." He says the record companies "turned their backs on the kids" by their practices in the '90s, and he believes the future is big enough for digital downloads and CDs. He also discusses Tower's overexpansion and financial mismanagement.
Russ is a great guy — down-to-earth, unpresupposing and really smart. He talks about the momentous changes occurring in the music industry, digital music, and where he'll be going from here. He hasn't been involved in running the company in recent years. Here is our 31-minute video interview. (Ourmedia page | watch video)
I also uploaded this to MotionBox, where people can watch it in Flash, but if you click the deep tags there to zoom in on a section of the conversation, it throws off the voice by a half second (at least in my browser).

Karaoke, Korea style
You can't go to South Korea without hitting a karaoke club, right? About nine of us ventured out to the Hongik college nightclub district last week for some impromptu crooning. Way more fun than I expected. Here's a 2-minute clip with Maria Pastora Sandoval from Chile, just to give you a taste of what these clubs are like. (Ourmedia page | watch video)

Podcast with hip hop group, alt rockers
The most intriguing podcast interview I conducted at the South by Southwest Music Festival last week came with the members of Heavyweight Dub Champion, a hip-hop/reggae/Caribbean sounds group out of Colorado, of all places. Spoke with Jeff (pictured at top), Stero, Totter, Grant and Patch in the podcast, featuring two of the group's singles. They say they have three records coming out this year.
I also interviewed the members of pouty girl rockers Magneta Lane (with bass player French pictured above) for this podcast (mp3 file | TowerPod page). Chris Ritke of 49media produced the podcast.

Podcast with Dengue Fever
Another immensely fun interview came with the members of Dengue Fever, a global pop/world music group fronted by Cambodian pop star Ch'hom Nimol, who sings in Khmer. The Los Angeles sextet blends the rhythms of ‘60s Cambodian pop - heavily influenced by American surf, rock and early psychedelic garage bands - with their own eclectic mix of American and international styles.
Here's my podcast interview (mp3 file | TowerPod page). Chris Ritke of 49media produced the podcast. Here's their latest album, Escape From Dragon House.

Berkeley's The Herms
My first music podcast came at the South by Southwest Music fest, where I interviewed Berkeley's The Herms for the initial SXSW podcast on TowerPod. Alex Lutz, Alex Tuzin and Ryan Mulroney hold forth on how they make their music. (mp3 file | TowerPod page) In the second half of the podcast, Chris Ritke interviews another alt-rock band, The Mutts. Yep, I took all the photos in this SXSW podcast series.

Tina Dico, Danish superstar
The highlight of South by Southwest for me came when I interviewed Tina Dico, an enchanting and immensely talented singer-songwriter out of Denmark who, just days earlier, won that country's equivalent of the Grammy for best new female artist.
Here's a photo set of Tina that I shot, and here's the podcast of her on Tower Records' TowerPod that went up the other day. (mp3 file | TowerPod page) Her new album is called In the Red.
This is all a bit of an experiment. Outhink is incorporating high-fidelity, full-length songs from indie artists in the middle of a podcasts. Once we attract advertising, we'll split revenues with the podcasters.
