Magnify.net, home to thousands of channels

Steve Rosenbaum on Magnify.net from JD Lasica on Vimeo.

Here's a 5-minute video interview I did with Steve Rosenbaum, a pioneer in the field of user-created video and the founder and CEO of Magnify.net. Steve talks about the explosion of thousands of channels on the service, such as Native American Tube, a channel that hosts more than 5,000 videos. Steve talks about how premium channels are taking off on Magnify, and that the community is leading the way in determining where the company is heading.

Conducted at the Stanford Summit in July 2008.

John McCain on the US relationship with China

John McCain: U.S. as a debtor nation not a big priority from JD Lasica on Vimeo.

Here's footage I shot of Sen. John McCain at Stanford University on Aug. 1, 2007, when he was still a longshot for the Republican nomination for president.

In this 3-minute clip, McCain says of the United States' dependence on China to finance our national debt: "It's not as important as it would have been some years ago." He then listed other aspects of our relationship with China that he found more troubling.

Scratch: education and engagement at MIT

An experiment in youth engagement from JD Lasica on Vimeo.

At the MIT Media Lab recently I interviewed Karen A. Brennan of the wonderfully named Lifelong Kindergarten program (description of programs here) about an MIT project called Scratch.

In this 3-minute video she tells how youth personal engagement translates into adult civic engagement, bringing the parents, students and teachers together to see how the students were able to construct their own storytelling narratives rather than engage in what the researchers had expected at the outset: acts of citizen journalism.

Alas, the video is underlit, since I was using a Samsung SC-HMX10 HD  camcorder that doesn't allow for lighting attachments.

Breaking into musical theater

Breaking into theater from JD Lasica on Vimeo.

An 8-minute video interview with high school student Christina, a member of the Tri-Valley Young Performers Academy in the San Francisco East Bay, about acting and her performance in "The Music Man." Christina has energy to spare and smartly talks about using her stage experience to help with public speaking and a career in broadcasting.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Interview with ZeroFootprint from JD Lasica on Vimeo.

Here's a 4 1/2-minute video interview with Deborah Kaplan, executive director of Zerofootprint.net, an amazing organization based in Toronto and devoted to help organizations, cities and individuals recognize their carbon footprint and take specific measures to help reduce climate change. The interview was conducted at the Stanford Summit in July 2008.

They're working with the cities of Toronto, Seattle, Edmonton and Ottawa to help citizens reduce their carbon footprints. For starters, check out their One Minute Calculator.
